Ray Burling Interview
“My Father and Grandfather inspired me to be the Boss I am today” -Ray Burling.
We at BoxHuman take time to celebrate founders behind the businesses. Especially the ones who are inspiring, helping and bringing light within the world. We do this in order to rebalance some of the negative messages we often hear, see and receive on a daily basis. We met up quickly with one of these amazing individuals…
Hi Ray, thank you for taking part in our Quick-Inspire Series. Okay, let’s start things off by getting to know you really quickly. Can you please tell me in one sentence who you are and what you do?
My name is Ray Burling, I am forty six, live in Essex and I have three children.
And can you please tell us the name of your business and what your business is all about?
I own two businesses. One is a used car dealership in Epping, Essex called CarwiseUK and the other is a tanning salon in Hoddesdon called SunRayz.
Wow, a serial entrepreneur, congratulations! Great quick intro, thank you Ray! Let’s now start the quick inspire questions. I can see you are ready so let’s go…
1) Can you please tell us what inspired you to start your own car business and why?
I have been in the motor industry for some thirty-five years, as were my Father and Grandfather, so my inspiration to work for yourself came from them. I also like to be my own Boss and earn money for myself not other people.
2) What has been your biggest achievement and proudest moment so far and why?
It is hard to pinpoint my biggest achievement as there has been many. I formerly was a Quad Bike Champion where I competed in California which was a great period of my life. Currently, running CarwiseUK to the standard it is, pleases me immensely.
3) What’s been your biggest challenge that you’ve had to go through since starting and running your business and how did you overcome it?
Running your own business comes with a degree of challenges. Staff is a huge factor, having people you can trust and rely on is huge. Additionally the economy plays a big part in the motor industry too especially when it affects earnings as that has a knock on effect for car sales.
4) What do you do to empower or motivate yourself on a daily basis?
I always like to think positive and the last six months of my life have taught me that in many ways.
5) What is your favourite car and why?
My favourite car … I do love the Bentley Continental (having owned a few in my time) and the Range Rover Autobiography too.
6) What is your favourite quote or piece of advice that inspires you?
Currently my favourite motto has to be “Smile and Wave’. It is something that my partner and I seem to say on a daily basis at the moment!
7) What would you say to inspire and empower someone who was going to start a business?
Learn about your industry, expect to put in a lot of unsociable hours and make sure you have the funds in the bank as it is always slow to start and you never know what is round the corner.
8) What future goals do you want to achieve with your business and why?
SunRayz runs like clockwork so for me my main goals are with CarwiseUK. I would like to expand my business as much as possible with selling more higher end cars and also possibly franchising in the future.
And finally BoxHuman is an empowered individual. They will not be defined by society’s labels. They show the better qualities of humankind, such as strength, kindness and inspiration. Can you please tell us what makes you a BoxHuman?
I feel I am a BoxHuman as I’ve have had to work hard to where I now am in life and suffer the knock backs and falls along the way.
